SHILLONG, Oct 27: Deputy Chief Minister and Chairman of the Regional Committee for West Jaintia Hills, Sniawbhalang Dhar, on Monday claimed that Lapangap is now completely peaceful even as the ongoing harvesting is likely to be completed by Tuesday.
Speaking to media persons here, Dhar said that Lapangap was always a peaceful area and there were no issues but the unrest in the area began only recently.
Stating that the situation has now returned to normal in the area and the Meghalaya government has deployed about 30 to 40 police personnel, Dhar added that the border talks with Assam will be held once Assam is ready, as the neighbouring state is currently busy with elections due early next year.
“The Meghalaya government is prepared to hold discussions anytime,” he said.
Lapangap recently witnessed a violent skirmish in which one Karbi villager lost his life.
Since then, tension has prevailed in the area.
Last week, the residents of Lapangap in West Jaintia Hills and Tapat in West Karbi Anglong, Assam, came together for the resumption of harvesting in the area. Before the resumption of harvesting, the headmen of Lapangap and Tapat signed an agreement in the presence of the authorities of the districts of Meghalaya and Assam concerned.
They unanimously agreed that person(s) involved in the death of Tapat resident Orivel Timung, son of the late Pang-eh Timung, will be arrested and the investigation into the incident will be fast-tracked.
