BAGHMARA, Nov 1: The saga of neglect in the education sector, particularly in the lower primary section, has surfaced once again after the Niksamso Garo Community Organisation (NGCO) raised concerns over a school building that has fallen into a state of complete disrepair.
The school in question is the Darang Boldak Government LP School in South Garo Hills district, under the Baghmara C&RD Block. It currently has 21 students and two teachers catering to their educational needs.
“The school has been left in a completely damaged condition for a long time, yet the concerned department and authorities have shown no care or response. Despite repeated complaints from villagers, no official has visited the site or taken any action to repair the school,” stated NGCO president, Tengrak Marak.
Marak added that both students and teachers are at the mercy of the elements, as they are forced to conduct classes in temporary shelters due to the unsafe condition of the school building.
Videos and photos shared by the NGCO showed two structures resembling garbage dumps rather than functioning school buildings. The organisation alleged that classes have not been held in the school for years, with no attention paid to the plight of the students and teachers.
“Villagers have expressed strong disappointment and asked why the authorities continue to ignore such an important issue affecting children’s education and safety. We as members of civil society want to urge the concerned authorities to not neglect the issue and inspect and repair the school on a war footing,” asserted Tengrak.
“Education is the foundation of our future, and negligence in this matter is unacceptable,” the organisation added.
