Two suspected cow smugglers arrested after encounter in UP
MIRZAPUR, Dec 17: Police on Wednesday rescued 33 cattle allegedly being illegally transported for slaughter and arrested two suspected cow smugglers after an encounter, officials said.Acting on a tip-off, a police team intercepted a truck on which cattle were allegedly being transported from MPr’s Sidhi district to Bihar.When the police tried to stop the vehicle, the suspects got down and allegedly opened fire in an attempt to evade arrest. In retaliatory action, one of the alleged smugglers, identified as Sonu Bind, sustained a bullet injury in his leg.Bind was taken into custody and sent to hospital under police guard, they said.The second accused, Mithilesh Kumari was injured after being hit by a vehicle during the incident and was apprehended on the spot.The police recovered 33 cattle – 15 cows and 18 bulls and calves – allegedly being transported in a cruel manner for slaughter. An illegal .315 bore country-made pistol along with one live cartridge and an empty shell were also seized from the spot. (PTI)
Wild elephant tramples elderly woman to death
KORBA, Dec 17: A 60-year-old woman was killed in an elephant attack in Chhattisgarh’s Korba district in the wee hours of Wednesday, a forest official said.The incident took place around 3 am when the victim, identified as Phoolsundari Manjhawar and her husband, were asleep in the courtyard of their residence. The woman woke up on hearing the calls of an elephant nearby and started running. The wild animal chased her and trampled her to death, while her husband managed to save himself by hiding under the bed. After being alerted, the forest personnel reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem. (PTI)
IAF, Russian air force take part in ‘Exercise AviaIndra’
NEW DELHI, Dec 17: Personnel from the air forces of India and Russia are taking part in an ongoing defence exercise, during which they will conduct joint flying operations on Su-30 MKI, Tejas, IL-78 and Mi-17 helicopters, and share best practices, according to the IAF.The Indian Air Force is hosting ‘Exercise AviaIndra’, a joint exercise with the Russian Federation Aerospace Force (RFASF) from December 15-22, officials said.“Personnel from both forces will conduct joint flying operations on Su-30 MKI, Tejas, IL-78 and Mi-17 helicopters, sharing best practices and lessons learnt. It provides an opportunity to enhance bilateral cooperation, mutual understanding and aerospace synergy,” it said. (PTI)
