32 swimmers including three women participate in midnight plunge

SHILLONG, Jan 2: Shillong rang in the New Year on a peaceful and upbeat note, with large crowds gathering across the city, especially at Khyndailad, which was lit up with Christmas decorations and declared a pedestrian-only zone for the night.
Tourists and locals celebrated together, dancing along the streets to music played on large portable speakers.
Despite the enthusiasm and late-night revelry, the celebrations passed off in an orderly manner without any major untoward incidents, reflecting a disciplined and welcoming festive atmosphere.
One moment from Khyndailad that went viral on social media involved a foreign tourist, believed to be a European national, dancing freely late at night.
In a gesture that drew widespread appreciation online, local youths formed a human chain around her to ensure her safety and prevent overcrowding, allowing her to celebrate undisturbed. The act was hailed as an example of Shillong’s civic responsibility and respect for visitors.
Adding a traditional touch to the New Year celebrations was the annual midnight swim organised by Forever Young at the Crinoline Swimming Pool.
The alcohol-free event witnessed the participation of 32 swimmers, including three women, who took the plunge shortly after midnight.
The swim was held amid cold conditions, with temperatures recorded at around 14.6 degrees Celsius during the day and dipping to a minimum of 4 degrees Celsius at the Shillong meteorological station. Organisers said the event was conducted without any intoxicants, underscoring a message of healthy and responsible celebration.
Together, the calm street festivities and the disciplined midnight swim marked a vibrant yet safe start to the New Year in the Meghalaya capital.
