SHILLONG, Jan 27: Banking services across Meghalaya were disrupted on Tuesday as employees joined a nationwide strike demanding a five-day work week.
The strike was organized by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), which represents staff from public sector, private, foreign, regional rural, and cooperative banks. UFBU convenor Wandaplang Mawroh said the agitation aims to secure Saturdays as holidays, with extended working hours from Monday to Friday.
“We have been demanding a five-day work week, and it’s high time the government takes our demands seriously,” Mawroh said. He clarified that the protest was not intended to inconvenience customers but to highlight the need for improved working conditions.
“Our demand is not against customers, but for a sustainable and humane banking system,” he added.
According to the UFBU, approximately eight lakh bank employees and officers participated in the strike nationwide.
