SHILLONG: While expressing its strong voices of dissent over the sudden death of the under-trial prisoner Balsan S Marak, the Meghalaya Peoples Human Rights Council (MPHRC) has expressed concern over the recurrence of torture perpetrated by the State Police whose function is to protect the citizens and not to commit gruesome offences against them.
In a statement issued here, MPHRC Chairman Dino D.G. Dympep, said that any form of torture or cruel inhuman treatment in police custody, would fall within the ambit of strong human rights abuses whether it occurs during the investigation or interrogation where in most cases the police themselves become law breakers and no civilized nations can permit that to happen.
“We strongly demand immediate suspension and transfer of the West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police Mukesh Kumar Sing for his act of human rights violation,” said the MPHRC chief.
According to MPHRC, the Government must repair the damage done by its officers under the shield of uniform and authority within the four walls of the police station or lock-up where the victim has become totally helpless.
