New Delhi: Congress chief Sonia Gandhi while expressing dismay over her party’s poor show in Tura and reports of intense infighting in Shillong has sought a detailed report from the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on the twin issues.
Gandhi conveyed this to the MPCC president D D Lapang who called on her on Thursday before leaving for Shillong, AICC sources said.
The former Chief Minister briefed the Congress chief about the Lok Sabha polls results in the Hill State, but she sought a detailed and exhaustive report.
The party president also made it a point that the final report of the MPCC must contain evidence of anti-party activities and cause of defeat of the party candidate in Tura. She also made it clear that leaders and their supporters who went against party’s official candidates should be named in the report for action to be taken, sources said.
Lapang earlier met AICC leader Ambika Soni and General Secretary in charge of the state Luizinho Faleiro to extend support to Gandhi’s leadership at this moment of the crisis. But that did not cut much ice with her and she was determined to take action against those who indulged in anti-party activities, sources claimed.
There were reports from the state that some Congress leaders appointed agents in favour of the rival candidates in both polling booths and even counting centres. Some of them openly campaigned against official candidates of the party.
The AICC might be given photographic evidence of dissident activities in the state during the polls, sources said.
Our Reporter adds: A similar resolution of the North East Congress Coordination Committee (NECCC) requesting the Congress president and vice-president Rahul Gandhi to continue to lead the party was also submitted by Lapang, who is also the chairman of the NECCC.
