SHILLONG: It seems like the highly-anticipated cable car project in the city may soon become a reality with the Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) on Saturday announcing that they would invite tenders for the project mulled by the State Government to ease the traffic congestion in the city which has reached its zenith.

Principal Secretary, Transport department, Hector Marwein, while speaking to The Shillong Times on Saturday, said, “The MTC would soon call for bidding for the project.”

The State Government, had, earlier mooted the idea of cable cars in the city as an option to ease the burgeoning traffic congestion after Leading Edge Adventurers and Airparks Private Limited had made a presentation to Chief Minister on May 26 last on the benefits of cable cars.

According to Marwein, after the bidding process is over the Government would make a proper study to examine the entire project.

If the dream project is fulfilled, it would provide a huge boost to the Government’s plans of making Meghalaya a sought after destination for both domestic and international tourists.

It may be mentioned that Leading Edge Adventurers and Airparks Private Limited had, earlier, successfully installed metro cable car systems in Venezuela and elsewhere. The private firm had also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Nagaland government last year to start cable cars in Kohima on a 9.8-km stretch at a cost of around Rs 388 crore.

Meanwhile, Marwein also informed that the project, if it ever becomes a reality, would be executed on a private-public partnership mode with the co-ordination of the Transport department.
