SHILLONG, April 11: The BJP Meghalaya unit on Saturday called for increased political representation of women, arguing that high female voter turnout must be reflected in the composition of elected bodies.
BJP Mahila Morcha president Arena Hynniewta, in a statement issued on the occasion of Shad Suk Mynsiem, highlighted women’s contributions to Meghalaya’s progress in sectors such as healthcare, education, law and administration.
She noted that central government initiatives under Prime Minister Narendra Modi have advanced women’s access to education and financial independence.
However, Hynniewta pointed out that despite rising participation at the polls, women remain underrepresented in the state Assembly and Parliament.
Criticising previous governments for failing to secure reservations for women, she referred to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam as a landmark opportunity to improve governance.
She also called for the effective implementation of the legislation to ensure women play a more active role in decision-making processes.
