SHILLONG, April 14: Former minister and NPP leader James PK Sangma has underlined the growing momentum of the “One Northeast” movement, an initiative led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to foster political unity across the region.
Speaking to reporters, James said the initiative is gaining traction, with prominent leaders from various states aligning with its vision. He cited Daniel Langthasa as one such leader who has joined the effort to bring the region under a common political platform.
“As we speak, One Northeast is taking shape. Leaders from different states are coming together. This is an effort where all of us must unite and work collectively,” Sangma said.
He stressed that the movement aims to create a unified voice to effectively represent the interests of the Northeast at the national level. “In unity lies our strength. The goal is to have one platform and a single voice for the region,” he added.
Clarifying that the initiative transcends simple alliances, James described “One Northeast” as a political ideology rather than a rigid organisation. “The name is not important—it is the ideology and the thought process that matter. This is about action, and that action has already begun,” he said.
He noted that while the movement is still evolving, it has already generated significant interest among regional leaders. Several influential figures have indicated their willingness to join once the ongoing electoral processes conclude.
James also pointed out that the movement seeks to address the long-standing sense of neglect resulting from fragmented political representation. “There is a growing realisation among the people of the Northeast that unless we stand united, we will continue to feel sidelined,” he said.
Efforts are currently underway to expand the movement’s outreach, with several regional parties and leaders being briefed on the initiative’s objectives.
