SHILLONG, April 14: The Meghalaya government has ordered an inquiry into the alleged desecration of a statue of Jesus Christ at Chibinang Main Market in West Garo Hills.
Deputy Chief Minister confirmed the development on Tuesday while refusing to speak about allegations of former MLA SG Esmatur Mominin’s involvement in inciting violence in Garo Hills.
Additionally, State BJP vice president and Tura MDC Bernard N. Marak on Tuesday filed an FIR with the West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police alleging incidents of violence, arson and desecration of the statue of Christ at Chibinang.
In his complaint, Marak stated that during a recent visit to Chibinang Main Market, locals informed him of an incident that allegedly took place on March 9, 2026, which, he claimed, has not been acted upon so far. He alleged that a mob, “largely consisting of illegal migrants,” assembled unlawfully in the area and carried out acts of violence, including setting fire to shops and residential houses, resulting in damage to property and livelihoods.
The complaint further alleged that the mob deliberately destroyed and desecrated a statue of Lord Jesus Christ at Chibinang Main Market, thereby hurting the religious sentiments of the Christian community.
Marak claimed that the incident occurred following instigation by Esmatur Mominin.
Expressing concern over the matter, he lamented that no FIR had been registered to date and alleged that the incident had been overlooked despite its serious implications for communal harmony and law and order.
