SHILLONG, April 16: BJP Meghalaya chief spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang on Thursday said the country should acknowledge the Centre’s role in pushing the long-pending Women’s Reservation Bill, which he claimed had remained unaddressed for decades.
Speaking to reporters, Kharkrang said that while previous governments often highlighted women’s empowerment during election campaigns, they failed to deliver tangible progress. He argued that the current BJP-led government has taken concrete steps to ensure the bill becomes law.
“The issue of women’s empowerment often faded after elections. What sets this government apart is the effort to translate commitment into action,” Kharkrang said. He described the legislation as a landmark reform that would significantly change governance once fully enacted.
Regarding the timeline, Kharkrang clarified that the reservation provisions are expected to take effect starting with the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, with state-level implementation to follow.
He noted that while current candidates were declared prior to this development, the scheduled rollout from 2029 reflects a major policy shift. Kharkrang urged citizens to recognise the Centre’s efforts in advancing women’s representation in the political process.
