Shillong, April 17: The stage is set for a high-voltage North-East derby as Shillong Lajong FC prepare to face Aizawl FC in their final Stage 1 fixture of the Indian Football League at the SSA Stadium here on Saturday.
Scheduled for a 6:30 PM kickoff, the clash promises intensity, pride, and crucial stakes for both sides. Lajong return to familiar territory after a gruelling stretch of five consecutive away matches, carrying both confidence and momentum into the encounter.
Having already secured qualification for the Championship Round, the Shillong-based outfit currently sit fourth on the table with 14 points from eight matches and will be keen to wrap up the phase on a strong note.
Head coach Birendra Thapa struck an optimistic tone ahead of the game, underlining the importance of maintaining rhythm and finishing the stage positively. At the same time, he acknowledged the challenge posed by a derby of this magnitude, where form often takes a back seat to passion and regional pride.
For Aizawl FC, the equation is far more urgent. Placed seventh with nine points from eight outings, they head into the contest knowing that a win is vital to keep their hopes of progressing to the Championship Round alive. With everything on the line, the Mizoram side are expected to come out with intent and aggression, setting the stage for a fiercely contested battle.
With pride, points, and progression all hanging in the balance, fans can expect an electrifying encounter under the lights. The match will be broadcast live on Sony Sports Network and DD Sports, while live streaming will be available on Sony Liv and Waves.
As the floodlights come alive at the SSA Stadium and the familiar roar of the Shillong crowd begins to echo through the hills, this contest promises to be far more than just another fixture on the calendar. It is a meeting of ambition and urgency, of momentum against desperation, where every tackle will carry weight and every moment could tilt the balance.
