Construction of DC office stalled

Jowai: Construction of the Deputy Commissioner’s office building at Khliehriat was delayed after it was found that there are rat-hole mines underneath the land where the building is proposed to be constructed.

The government is planning to construct a permanent office of the Deputy Commissioner in a government land adjacent to the present building where the DC office is housed.

Executive Engineer PWD (Building), Jowai, A Phawa said that after a site inspection it was found that the proposed land was not fit for) construction of the multistoried building due to the presence of rat-hole mines underneath the proposed site.

“We do not want to take any risk. We have advised the government against the construction of any kind of building in the proposed land except for single storey Assam type building,” Phawa said.

The site for the proposed DC office building is located adjacent to the current temporary office of the DC, Khliehriat. The site was earlier the office of the SDO Civil Sub Division and is a government land under the Khliehriat Civil Sub division.

Questions are being raised as to how a government land could be used for mining activities.

Based on the report of PWD (Building), Jowai the government has decided to change the site for the proposed construction of the DC office from the original site to the PWD land which is now part of the BSF camp in Khliehriat.

Phawa also said that the new site is located in the centre of Khliehriat so it was assumed that there are no mines underneath the land.
