GSU wants MRSSA in WGH, SWGH

TURA, April 20: The Garo Students’ Union (GSU) CEC, led by Zikku Balgra, has petitioned Chief Minister Conrad Sangma for the immediate implementation of the Meghalaya Resident Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) 2016 in West and South West Garo Hills. In a memorandum, the union cited growing concerns over illegal settlers and unverified settlements, particularly by individuals suspected of entering from Bangladesh. The GSU stated that this influx threatens public safety, law and order, and the demographic security of the region’s indigenous population. The union pointed out that local authorities currently lack the verification and monitoring systems needed to control such settlements. It urged the state government to direct district administrations to enforce the provisions of the MRSSA strictly. The GSU further requested that the government initiate special verification drives and monitoring mechanisms to identify and regulate all unverified tenants. The union maintained that the appeal is a necessary step to protect the rights, identity, and land of the indigenous tribal people of Garo Hills.
