SHILLONG, April 22: The High Court of Meghalaya has directed state authorities to strengthen monitoring at weighbridges and investigate reported irregularities in mineral transportation.
The directive follows an inspection conducted by the petitioner under a previous court order. An affidavit containing photographic evidence of the visits has been placed on record.
During the hearing, Advocate General A Kumar submitted a status report from the Commissioner of Transport. He informed the court that the government is considering installing additional CCTV cameras at strategic locations to monitor vehicle movement and weighing processes.
The Transport Department assured the court it would ensure all vehicles carry valid documentation, including challans, fitness certificates, and mineral transport licenses. Authorities will also verify if vehicles are equipped with High Security Registration Plates (HSRP).
To improve transparency, the state will install signage at key locations indicating operational weighbridges.
The court warned that strict action, including the seizure of vehicles and materials, will be taken against those violating legal requirements. It further directed the state to investigate discrepancies regarding specific vehicle numbers mentioned in the status report.
The matter is scheduled for further hearing on May 13, 2026, by which time an updated status report must be submitted.
