Nongpoh, April 29: Ri Bhoi police on Tuesday night resumed a vehicle checking drive targeting traffic violations, including heavy vehicles, light motor vehicles, and two-wheelers, with particular focus on drivers operating under the influence of alcohol
The renewed enforcement is carried out as part of a public awareness and cautioning exercise before stricter action is initiated against offenders in the coming days.
During the operation, police found a significant number of motorists violating traffic regulations. A majority of these cases involved drunk driving, along with two-wheeler riders not wearing helmets and other forms of traffic violations.
Speaking to media persons after the drive, Rubul Ali said the checking was initiated following numerous complaints from the public and the rise in road accidents, particularly those linked to drunk driving, which have frequently resulted in serious and fatal incidents.
He stated that the current phase of the drive is intended to create awareness and serve as a warning to violators.
He further informed that this is only the beginning and that the police will continue such drives. Once enforcement intensifies, there will be no leniency, and violators will face strict penalties.
Leaders of the RBYF, who participated in the drive, expressed serious concern over the increasing number of road accidents, especially along highways, noting that many of these incidents are caused by driving under the influence of alcohol.
They urged motorists to refrain from consuming alcohol while driving, stressing that such behaviour endangers not only the driver but also the general public. Two-wheeler riders were advised to wear helmets for their safety.
The organisation lauded the police for taking proactive measures and assured continued cooperation in the interest of public safety.
The checking was conducted at Byrnihat along National Highway-6, in the presence of Bankerlang Marwein, DSP of Ri Bhoi, Rubul Ali, Officer-in-Charge of Byrnihat Police Station, and Michael Marak, Officer in Charge of Nongpoh Police Station, along with other police personnel. Members of the Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF), Byrnihat Circle, led by President Ricky Lapang and Vice-President Frankie Ranee, also extended their support during the drive.
