GUWAHATI, May 1: Former Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh has underscored the need to effectively address the issue of illegal infiltration and safeguard land rights and security of the state in a lawful and measured manner.
“The situation unfolding in Manipur is often being portrayed as a conflict among its indigenous communities. This interpretation does not reflect the ground reality. The people of Manipur have a long history of coexistence, where recognised Scheduled Tribes (except for one tribe whose case is presently under review), Meitei, Meitei Pangal, and individuals from other parts of India have lived together with mutual respect and harmony,” Singh stated on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.
“The present concerns arise from issues linked to undocumented and illegal infiltration from across international borders. It is important to clearly distinguish this from the settled and recognised communities within the state,” he stated.
“The challenge before us is not internal division, but the need to safeguard the demographic balance, land rights and security of the state in a lawful and measured manner. Once the issue of illegal infiltration is effectively addressed through due process, many of the present tensions are expected to subside, restoring the natural equilibrium that has long defined Manipur’s society,” the former chief minister said.
He however added that people who have come from within the country and have chosen to make Manipur their home need not feel apprehensive.
“The Inner Line Permit system provides a structured and legal framework that governs entry and residence. With proper documentation and adherence to the law, every individual has the right to live, work, and contribute peacefully in Manipur,” Singh said.
