SHILLONG, May 2: GAD Minister Sosthenes Sohtun on Saturday said the government recognises the concerns of teachers being overburdened with census work as Meghalaya prepares to begin enumeration, stressing that their role remains crucial but carefully managed.
Addressing the matter, the minister said teachers play a central role in shaping children’s future and their concerns are important to the government.
At the same time, he underlined that the census exercise is vital as it determines whether families receive benefits such as job cards under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, access to ration, healthcare facilities and other essential services.
He explained that proper enumeration ensures a household becomes visible in the system and eligible for government support. The minister maintained that the responsibility assigned to teachers has been kept limited, supported and structured to minimise disruption to academic work.
Sohtun added that teachers are not only educators but also key partners in ensuring that every deserving family in the state is identified and supported through the census process.
