SHILLONG, May 5: The State Cabinet on Tuesday approved the Chocolate Mahseer (Neolissochilus hexagonolepis) locally known as Khasaw in Khasi and Na-rang in Garo as the State Fish of Meghalaya.
The proposal was accepted by the State Cabinet as the state till date does not have an officially designated state fish, unlike many other parts of the country.
“We have therefore decided to declare the Chocolate Mahseer, locally known in Khasi as Khasaw and in Garo as Na-rang as the state fish,” MDA spokesperson Wailadmiki Shylla said.
The decision has also been taken with a strong focus on conservation, to protect and promote this indigenous species native to Meghalaya, he added.
