SHILLONG, May 8: The state government has instituted an inquiry into the three-day violence in Garo Hills in March relating to the filing of nomination papers for the now-postponed GHADC election.
The notification issued by Chief Secretary Shakil P. Ahammed said that the Commission of Inquiry will be headed by Justice (retd) Tinilangthang Vaiphei.
The Commission will inquire into the circumstances leading to the incident on March 9 in West Garo Hills and submit a comprehensive fact finding report on the acts and omissions of the persons/ authorities concerns including any failure to prevent the occurrence of the incident.
The Commission will also inquire the root cause of the unrest and disturbance besides recommending remedial measures including administrative and institutional reforms to be adopted by the government to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in future.
The Commission has been asked to submit its report within 6 months. Conduct of the proceedings will be held in Tura.
