SHILLONG, May 12: The Union of Cook-cum-Helpers under the PM POSHAN scheme in Meghalaya on Tuesday sent a second reminder to the Union Ministry of Education, seeking a meeting to discuss an increase in their honorarium.
In a letter to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the union urged the ministry to address their long-pending demands on humanitarian grounds. They highlighted that workers currently receive only Rs 900 per month as the central government’s share, a figure that has remained stagnant for decades.
Union president Gina Nengnong requested that the honorarium be enhanced to Rs 9,000 per month. She noted that the workers, primarily women and marginalised labourers, have contributed significantly to the region and the nation’s growth through the scheme. Nengnong expressed hope that the government would ensure justice for the workers, stating that a fair wage is in the best interest of the students and the scheme’s future. A copy of the reminder was also forwarded to Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar.
