Shillong, May 17: The 14th edition of the Mawryngkneng Greater Football League got underway at the Mawryngkneng Mini Stadium on May 15 with local football enthusiasts turning up in large numbers to witness the opening ceremony and inaugural matches.
Organised by the Mawryngkneng Cultural Sport Club, which is affiliated with the Shillong Sports Association, the league features competitions in both First and Second Division categories. A total of 10 teams are participating in the First Division while 13 teams are competing in the Second Division.
The competition is being played in a single round-robin format, with every team facing each other once before the top four sides progress to the elimination rounds to determine the eventual champions.
As part of the opening programme, a friendly match was played between Mawryngkneng CSC and Smit SC, two teams participating in the SSA Second Division league. Despite several attacking moves from both sides, the match ended in a goalless draw.
The opening fixture of the First Division saw defending champions Mission SC take on 13th edition Second Division winners Diengpasoh Dongkseh SC in an evenly-contested encounter. Both teams created chances at either end, but neither side managed to find the breakthrough as the match also finished 0-0.
