SHILLONG, May 18: To strengthen emergency response for its citizens overseas, the Meghalaya government has decided to create a central database of students and professionals from the state living abroad.
The initiative aims to help the government facilitate the evacuation and repatriation of residents during wars, civil unrest, or other international emergencies.
A notification issued by the Home (Political) Department noted that while many residents study or work across various sectors globally, the absence of a centralised database makes it difficult for authorities to track and assist those stranded during crises. The government has urged students and professionals planning to travel abroad, as well as those already residing overseas, to voluntarily provide their details through the online portal meghalayaone.gov.in. Requested information includes contact details, permanent addresses in Meghalaya, particulars of guardians, and their current foreign addresses.
While registration is not mandatory, the government strongly encouraged residents to sign up to ensure smooth and timely assistance. The state assured that all provided information will remain strictly confidential and will only be accessed during emergencies to facilitate safe returns.
