SHILLONG: Toughening its stand the issue of influx, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of several prominent NGOs has issued August 31 deadline for the State Government to respond to their demands.

The JAC took this decision in a meeting held here on Tuesday.

“If the Government fails to respond within August 31, the NGOs would be forced to take some drastic measures,” FKJGP general secretary Jo Marwein said after the meeting.

“The Chief Minister during a meeting with a JAC delegation held in May had sought three months time to respond to all the demands of the NGOs,” he said adding “but surprisingly even after three months nothing concrete has come the government’s side.”

According to Marwein, the Government had also agreed to implement work permit system to tackle influx.

Stating that the government had also assured to implement the Compulsory of Registration of Marriage Act, he said, “the Act is yet to be implemented in its true spirit.”
