SHILLONG, May 20: The Department of English at North-Eastern Hill University, in collaboration with Sahitya Akademi and ICSSR-NERC, on Wednesday began a three-day workshop to translate 12 short stories from Garo, Khasi and Rajbanshi into English.
Workshop coordinator Dr. Preetinicha Barman said the languages were chosen for their ethnic significance and long-standing demand for inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
ICSSR-NERC Director Prof. Bhagirathi Panda stressed the role of translation in fostering transcultural understanding, while noted author Prof. Kynpham Sing Nongkynrih highlighted its importance in taking regional literature to a global audience.
The translated works, prepared by a team of Khasi, Garo and Rajbanshi translators, will be compiled and published by the Sahitya Akademi.
