SHILLONG, May 28: Nearly a year after its high-profile inauguration by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the Rs 100-crore Polo Shopping Mall remains non-functional, with the state government still struggling to lease out the facility.
It is pertinent to note that the mall has been kept under lock and key as multiple previous attempts to find operators for the market and its individual shops proved unsuccessful.
Even 10 months after the opening, the state government is back to the drawing board, having recently floated new tenders. However, the process is currently hampered by the issuance of various corrigenda to the bidding documents.
Authorities had previously acknowledged that high rental rates were the primary deterrent for potential bidders.
In a bid to finally attract interest, the Meghalaya government is now expected to scale down the rental requirements in the latest round of bidding. Meanwhile, the Tourism-cum-Business Centre at Police Bazar is also nearing completion.
Officials have stated that the government will determine an operational model for this centre once the construction is fully finished.
