SHILLONG, May 28: The Meghalaya Alliance of Contractors and Suppliers Welfare Association on Thursday called on the Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to demand a more stringent policy on issuing trading licenses to outside firms and individuals.
During the meeting, the association urged the KHADC to stop granting licenses to outsiders for projects that local contractors and suppliers are capable of executing independently.
The group, during the meeting, argued that priority and protection must be given to indigenous entrepreneurs to ensure they are not sidelined in the state’s business and contract sectors.
Specifically, the association also demanded that supply orders, minor construction projects and small-scale contracts be reserved for local firms.
They stated that such a move is essential to strengthen the local economy and generate employment opportunities for the youth.
The delegation also called for stricter implementation and monitoring of the Trading by Non-Tribals Regulation.
They maintained that indigenous businesses must be supported in sectors where they possess the necessary expertise and capacity.
The association, while expressing optimism following the discussion, stated that it is hopeful that the KHADC will take concrete steps to safeguard the interests of the local business community.
