SHILLONG, May 31: The second edition of SILK LINK (Leveraging Innovation, Networking and Knowledge) concluded in Shillong, focusing on integrating clean energy and innovation to strengthen Meghalaya’s Eri silk ecosystem.
Organised by the Customised Energy Solutions (CES) Foundation in collaboration with the Department of Textiles, the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA) and the Clean Energy Access Network (CLEAN), the two-day programme reviewed the progress of sustainable livelihoods within the silk value chain.
The event began with field visits to Sohkyrbam and Warmawsaw villages in Jirang, Ri-Bhoi.
Participants inspected solar-powered irrigation for castor plantations and climate-smart silk rearing rooms. These decentralised renewable energy interventions are designed to improve productivity and reduce manual labor for rural farmers and spinners.
A state-level workshop followed at MIIT Hall, Shillong, where stakeholders from the Central Silk Board, the Department of Sericulture and Weaving and various development partners discussed implementation strategies. Key topics included improved spinning technologies, revolving fund mechanisms and cluster-based development.
A major outcome of SILK LINK 2.0 was the commitment to establish an ‘Action Learning Working Group’. This body will facilitate regular dialogue and collaborative action among stakeholders to accelerate growth in the Eri silk sector.
CES Foundation Director Nitin Akhade stated that the initiative aims to build an ecosystem connecting farmers, artisans, and markets with clean energy solutions. He noted that the sector holds significant potential for women-led livelihoods and sustainable economic growth.
