TURA, June 3: The FKJGP, Garo Hills Zone, has expressed concern over the safety of MePDCL linemen following the recent death of Dalben Sangma while he was repairing a power line near Edenbari on May 26.
Dalben died of electrocution after someone reportedly switched on the line while he was carrying out repairs.
“We express our deep concern regarding the safety of MePDCL employees in the Garo Hills region. Recently, Sangma tragically lost his life on May 26. It is deeply saddening to receive such news and unfortunately, such incidents involving linemen losing their lives in the line of duty appear to be recurring in the Garo Hills. Earlier, a similar incident occurred in Dalu where a lineman was electrocuted during repair work but was fortunate to be saved by his colleague,” stated the Federation.
The group stated that it was informed that following Dalben’s death, his family was offered Rs 52,000 as ex gratia compensation.
“While we appreciate the department’s gesture, we believe this amount is inadequate and is not commensurate with his dedication and sacrifice. He was known as one of the most sincere and committed linemen in the department. In light of his bravery, we request the department to consider providing enhanced compensation to the family,” it added.
The Federation felt that linemen work tirelessly to ensure an uninterrupted electricity supply, especially during the rainy season when power disruptions are frequent. They risk their lives daily for the welfare of the public and are truly the unsung heroes who restore power at great personal risk.
In its letter, the FKJGP made several suggestions to improve the safety of these unsung heroes and reduce the occurrence of such incidents.
“The department should provide regular and comprehensive training to all linemen to ensure safe handling of electrical operations without errors.
Every lineman must be provided with standard safety equipment, including insulated gloves, helmets, safety belts and shoes to prevent workplace accidents,” it stated.
The Federation also felt that more linemen should be deployed so that the existing workforce is not overburdened, thereby reducing fatigue-related risks. Further, it said e-Shram registration should be made mandatory for all MEPDCL employees, as this central scheme provides financial assistance in cases of accidental death or permanent disability.
“The department should extend life insurance coverage to all linemen engaged in hazardous field work to secure their families’ future,” the FKJGP felt.
