SHILLONG, June 4: The state government has proposed implementing crematorium projects across Meghalaya in a phased and prioritised manner.
Following directions issued by the High Court of Meghalaya on April 15, the Chief Secretary convened a meeting to review the project’s progress. A status report was subsequently submitted to the court by the Additional Advocate General.
According to the report, while land has been made available, specific sites are still being identified. The Finance Department has approved financial assistance for all locations, and funds are scheduled for release to the districts for implementation.
During the hearing, the Amicus Curiae requested that once land is identified and allocated in consultation with stakeholders, district administrations should be directed to begin construction promptly. The Amicus Curiae also urged the government to consider providing cremation sites at Kenmynsaw and Syntein villages in the Mawsynram Block of East Khasi Hills.
The matter has been listed for July 15 to allow stakeholders to take necessary steps regarding land allocation.
