Trump becomes 1st sitting US Prez at NBA Finals Game

NEW YORK, June 9: US President Donald Trump made history on Monday by becoming the first sitting US president to attend an NBA Finals game, arriving at Madison Square Garden ahead of Game 3 between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs.
Trump flew from New Jersey aboard Marine One and travelled through Manhattan under heavy security before taking his seat in a suite.
His visit prompted an extensive security operation involving the New York Police Department and the US Secret Service. Large areas around Madison Square Garden were cordoned off, with fans required to pass through multiple checkpoints and airport-style screening.
The heightened security caused confusion and delays for commuters, tourists and ticket holders, many of whom complained about a lack of information regarding access routes.
Outside the arena, a small group of demonstrators held anti-Trump signs, while others expressed frustration over the restrictions.
The security measures also led to the cancellation of a popular watch party near the venue, which was relocated to Bryant Park outside the security perimeter.
Despite the disruptions, coaches and players downplayed concerns.
Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said he was simply pleased to be part of such a major event, while Knicks centre Mitchell Robinson remarked that the players would focus on the game regardless of who was in attendance.
Trump’s appearance marked the latest in a series of high-profile sporting events he has attended as president.
Similar security concerns arose during last year’s US Open men’s final, where lengthy screening procedures caused thousands of spectators to miss the start of the match.
The game itself was already one of the hottest tickets in New York, with entry prices exceeding USD 5,000 and premium seats costing tens of thousands of dollars.
As a result, many Knicks supporters opted to watch from bars, public gatherings and organised viewing events across the city as the team chased its first NBA championship since 1973. (AP)
