DHAKA, June 12: Bangladesh’s Awami League has strongly condemned the killing of a local Jubo League leader in Jashore, describing the incident as a troubling reminder of ongoing concerns over political violence, impunity and human rights protections in the country.
According to local media reports, 40-year-old Jubo League leader Jewel Ahmed Rana died after being critically injured in an attack in Chaugachha upazila of Jashore on Thursday.
His family has accused local leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) of involvement in the assault.
In a statement, the Awami League stressed that the right to life is a fundamental human right guaranteed under Bangladesh’s Constitution and international law.
The party called for a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation into the incident, saying all allegations of politically motivated violence must be examined without bias and in accordance with due process.
The party also highlighted claims made by Rana’s family that he was denied assistance while critically injured and that his wife was assaulted while trying to protect him.
While noting that these allegations have not been independently verified, the Awami League said that, if proven true, they would represent serious violations of human dignity and humanitarian principles.
The party further warned that the killing has renewed concerns about retaliatory violence and political intimidation following recent political changes in Bangladesh.
It said such incidents undermine the rule of law, fuel fear within communities and threaten democratic values.
Emphasising the need for justice and accountability, the Awami League said all citizens must receive equal protection under the law regardless of their political affiliation, and urged authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. (IANS)
