‘Need to promote tourism in state’

 SHILLONG: For tourism to flourish in the state there is an urgent need for co-ordination between different stakeholders, said Impulse NGO Network chairperson, Hasina Kharbhih.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a two-day consultation meeting on the Code of Conduct for Safe and Honorable Tourism in Meghalaya organized by Impulse NGO Network in collaboration with Department of Tourism, Government of Meghalaya and State Partner Women for Integrated Sustainable Empowerment at Raitong building here on Wednesday, Kharbhih stressed on the need to inculcate a sense of understanding and co-operation among various stakeholders in the field of tourism.

Citing that Meghalaya acquires the potential when it comes to Tourism, Kharbhih said there is a need to promote it.

While highlighting on one of the famous tourist spots Cherrapunjee Kharbhih said, “Meghalaya tourism has to go beyond promoting Cherrapunjee” adding that Meghalaya tourism should even  promote legend tourism which include folklore, folk tales of the place.

She also stated that there is a need to have more members (stakeholders) from different sectors such as hoteliers, tourist Taxi Association, tour operators to be included within the Confederation of Tourism Industry Meghalaya so as to ease tourist coming to the state.

The state consultation on Wednesday also discussed on how various stakeholders such as Tour operators, Hoteliers, NGOs, Law Enforcement, Government Departments such as Labor, Education, Forest and Environment, Social Welfare and Tourism, can play a role to carry forward in implementing and making it workable.

It may be mentioned that Meghalaya has adopted the Code of Conduct for Safe and Honorable Tourism, officially released by the then State Tourism Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on March this year.
