SHILLONG, June 22: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday strongly advocated the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), citing his own experience of using one in Shillong and describing it as a practical, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable mode of transport.
Speaking about the growing need to embrace cleaner mobility solutions, the Chief Minister said he has been using an electric vehicle in Shillong city for some time and has found it highly convenient for daily commuting. He encouraged more people to transition to EVs, stressing that this shift would significantly contribute to long-term sustainability and environmental conservation.
Addressing one of the most common concerns among prospective EV users, Sangma said that many people ask where to charge their EVs. According to him, the answer is simple — EVs can be charged at home just like a mobile phone, eliminating the need for frequent visits to fuel stations.
Drawing from his personal experience, the Chief Minister said a single charge is sufficient for his travel requirements within Shillong city, making electric vehicles a practical option for urban commuters. He noted that advances in battery technology and charging infrastructure have made EVs increasingly reliable and suitable for everyday use.
Sangma further highlighted the economic advantages of electric mobility, pointing out that EVs have lower running costs compared to conventional fuel-powered vehicles. Besides reducing expenditure on fuel, he said electric vehicles also play an important role in lowering carbon emissions and improving air quality.
The Chief Minister’s remarks come amid growing efforts across the country to promote clean energy and sustainable transportation. With governments at various levels pushing for greener alternatives, Meghalaya too has been exploring measures to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles as part of its broader commitment to environmental sustainability.
Reiterating the importance of embracing cleaner technologies, Sangma urged citizens to consider electric vehicles not merely as an alternative mode of transport but as an investment in a more sustainable future. He said wider adoption of EVs would help reduce dependence on fossil fuels while contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment for future generations.
