SHILLONG, June 23: While downplaying fears of ‘Ka Bos Jong Ngi’ — a public bus transport initiative — meeting the same fate as JNNURM buses, the state government has revealed that an additional fleet of 15 buses will be deployed from July 3 and the service will now expand to other city routes.
Currently, the buses operate on a single route from New Shillong Township to Upper Shillong.
Speaking to media persons on Tuesday, Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said bus operators have been instructed to strictly maintain the newly launched buses so that they do not become unusable after merely one or two years. In this regard, a meeting was also called by the state government last year.
The much-vaunted Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) buses in Shillong were not cared for and ended up in bus yards after a short period of operations. A majority of those buses were later condemned.
