SHILLONG, June 26: In a significant administrative shift, the East Khasi Hills District Administration has authorised all Block Development Officers (BDOs) to function as Executive Magistrates for matters concerning birth and death registrations.
The order, issued by Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal, empowers BDOs to handle the registration, correction, cancellation, and delayed registration of births and deaths within their respective jurisdictions.
Baranwal stated that the decision aims to ensure the timely disposal of cases and improve efficiency. With the order taking immediate effect, applicants are now required to submit their requests directly to their respective Block Development Offices instead of approaching the district headquarters in Shillong.
The directive was issued under Section 13(3) of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969, and Rule 9(3) of the Meghalaya Registration of Births and Deaths Rules, 1999. It will remain in effect until further orders.
