SHILLONG, July 1: A dog that had survived the recent poisoning incident has died despite receiving treatment and follow-up care, bringing the total number of fatalities linked to the case to 12.
According to the caregiver, the dog completed a five-day course of treatment for poisoning before coming under their care for recovery. During this period, the animal exhibited signs of excessive thirst and appeared traumatised, refusing to eat rice even when it was mixed with meat. It would only consume small pieces of meat, boiled vegetables, and chicken soup.
Despite continued care, the dog’s condition suddenly worsened, and it passed away on Wednesday morning. Kidney failure is suspected to have been the cause of death, although no post-mortem examination was conducted.
The caregiver immediately informed the Inspector-in-Charge, who advised that a post-mortem was unnecessary as the dog had already been undergoing treatment. To prevent any potential risk of infection, the officer recommended that the animal be buried without delay. The dog was subsequently laid to rest.
With this latest death, the toll from the poisoning incident has risen to 12, raising renewed concerns among animal welfare advocates over the incident and the need for accountability.
In a separate incident, another dog was reportedly killed in a hit-and-run involving a Nano car in the Rilbong-Laban area. The vehicle allegedly struck the animal and fled the scene. The incident has added to growing concerns over the safety and welfare of animals in the city.
