SHILLONG, July 12: The Meghalaya BJP on Sunday urged the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government to immediately release the pending salaries of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) employees and honour the commitments made under the Tripartite Agreement.
State BJP vice president and Tura MDC Bernard N. Marak claimed that the government has failed to implement Paragraph 3.1 of the agreement, which assured employees that salaries would be credited on the first day of every month following their recent agitation.
Marak noted that despite these assurances, salaries for the current month had not been paid even by July 10. He further highlighted that 30 months of salary arrears remain outstanding despite repeated promises to clear the dues.
According to the BJP leader, the prolonged delay has placed employees under severe financial distress, hampering their ability to pay utility bills, meet educational expenses, and repay loans. He added that many staff members are now being treated as defaulters by financial institutions due to the irregular payments.
Calling for urgent intervention, Marak demanded that the state government release the monthly salaries without further delay and provide a clear, time-bound schedule to settle the outstanding arrears.
He stated that the continued neglect undermines the spirit of the agreement reached between the government and the council employees.
