SHILLONG, July 26: The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) on Sunday successfully retrieved the body of a missing person from the Wahniangleng River near Phra Mer, Mylliem, bringing a four-day search and recovery operation to an end.
The operation began on July 22 after information was received about the disappearance of a resident of Phra Mer, Mylliem.
The SDRF, in coordination with Mawngap Police and local residents of Laitkroh and Phra Mer, launched an extensive search of the deep gorges and along the Wahniangleng River. Search teams also deployed a Rubber Inflatable Boat (RIB) to comb the river stretch from Mawphlang Dam.
Despite intensive searches covering both the upstream and downstream sections of the river on July 23 and 24, no trace of the missing person was found.
On July 25, local residents located the body in a confined section of the river.
SDRF personnel immediately initiated recovery efforts, but the operation had to be suspended due to strong water currents and hazardous conditions.
According to the Additional Public Relations Officer of the Directorate of Civil Defence and Home Guards, SSL Marshillong, the search operation resumed early on Sunday morning, and at around 7:10 am, the SDRF team successfully retrieved the body.
The body was subsequently handed over to Mawngap Police for completion of the necessary legal formalities.
