SHILLONG: Shedding new light on the controversy which has erupted following the resignation of two senior employees of MUDA on Monday, official sources on Wednesday said the two persons – a Social Development Specialist (SDS) and a Research Officer (RS) – were attached to the Project Monitoring Unit (PMU) which is responsible for monitoring the various JNNURM projects being implemented in the State.
Commenting that these employees were a financial burden since they were drawing hefty salaries between Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000 monthly through a project sponsored by the Union Government, the MUDA officials added, “There is no justification in paying huge salaries if they are not doing any job. Majority of those attached with the PMU have close relations with the politicians.”
“The primary role of these employees was to monitor and supervise the JNNURM projects which are being implemented. But despite drawing such huge salaries they failed to perform their duties,” the sources added.
What is worse is that some of the employees attached to the PMU never turn up for duties, the official sources said, adding that they would only come at the end of the month to collect their salaries.
“These employees have been asked to perform as expected from them and were also asked to assist in the collection of the parking fees since they have no other job to perform,” the sources claimed.
The sources, however, admitted that the staffs attached to the PMU have not got their salaries for the past five months since the Centre has not released any fund for payment of their salaries.
Mentioning that it was difficult to ascertain the reason that led to their resignation, the sources said, “They might have resigned from the job because they were unhappy with the decision of asking them to assist in the collection of parking fees. There is also a possibility that they might have resigned because they have not received their salaries for past five months.”
