New Delhi: Lok Sabha member from Tura and NPP chief, Purno A. Sangma, on Friday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the newly-constructed Dudhnoi-Mendipathar railway line, the first in Meghalaya, which is ready for regular rail service.
“It is a very prestigious project and it is not out of place to mention that not only the people of the area but of the entire North East region will feel honoured and proud if the railway connectivity is inaugurated by you,” Sangma said in a letter addressed to the Prime Minister.
The Mendipathar station is the first railway station on Meghalaya soil. A train engine rolled on the tracks in the hilly state for the first time on March 31 this year.
Regular train services are still awaited even though a passenger train was announced on the route during the last Rail budget.
The track has already received safety clearance from the Commission of Railway Safety.
