Guwahati: Flood situation has remained grim in total six revenue circles of Assam’s Sonitpur and Golaghat districts where a number of villages and tracts of crop lands were still under water for the second day on Thursday.

According to official sources the river Dhansiri has wrecked havoc in Golaghat district where flood waters have inundated 31 villages in three revenue circles of Golaghat, Morongi and Khumtai and damaged standing crop on about 500 hectares of land. Over 4000 people have been severely affected by flood in the district so far.

In Sonitpur district, the flood caused by Jia Bharali and Jorasar rivers have inundated 11 villages in three revenue circles of Tezpur, Naduar and Bishwanath Charilai and rendered about 5000 people homeless.

Though the administration have taken steps to provide temporary shelter to the flood-hit in both the districts, the relief operation is yet to be streamlined much to the chagrin of the flood hit. Flood-hit in Golaghat district alleged that the unprecedented swelling of water level in Dhansiri river was due to opening of flood gate in a Doyang hydel project in neighbouring Nagaland.

Several villages at Kuthori and Bogori near Kaziranga National Park too have been submerged by flash floods caused by a river flowing down from the neighboring Karbi Anglong hills. Hundreds of village households in the area have lost large number of movable property with surging waters inundating their houses in non tkme on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, about 13000 flood-hit people are still lodged in temporary shelter cum relief camps in the worst affected Dhemaji district where flash floods caused by Jiadhal and Gai-nadi on August 15 left a trail of destruction. The roads and railway tracks are in shambles in the district. Various NGOs have joined hands with the government to augment the flood relief operations.
