Resubelpara: When I was accompanying Executive Chairman of MBOSE (Deputed by Chief Secretary) to assess the flood situation in North Garo Hills visiting relief camps, I noticed Te’re R Marak, a girl of about 20 and a student of Class X from Bakenang Nalsa near Bajengdoba.

She was about to be swept away by the flood water on the morning of September 22 at around 6:00. As the sudden natural calamity flooded the entire Bajengdoba area in North Garo Hills, she did not leave her home while others were evacuated. It was only when the flood waters rose that she realized she had nowhere to go. Then an idea struck her mind and she climbed up the ceiling of the room and began praying to God.

The water continued its flow till 3:00 in the evening. She cried for help but there was no one to hear her since people who took shelter at the upland village were far away. Since the whole communication network collapsed, there was no way to communicate through mobile phones. Moreover, there was no road communication as PWD roads were washed away.

She remained at the ceiling for nine long hours and according to her, she learnt a great lesson, a lesson to love God.

When I spoke to her, she said, “There is a Great One, He is Mighty, He alone recued me from the dreadful attack of flood”.

She has survived but at home there are no clothes and books as they were washed away in the flood. She is preparing to appear the matriculation examination. Like Te’re, there are many students, whose future seem to be at stake owing to the devastation. (The report was a first person accoount by KD MOmin)
