SHILLONG: The Central team which was on a two-day visit to the flood-affected areas in Garo Hills met Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Wednesday and apprised him of their findings.

The team comprised of officers from various Central ministries like Home, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Power, Road Transport and Highways, Rural Development, Finance, Health, etc.

Terming the recent floods in Garo Hills as unprecedented and unexpected, the Chief Minister told the Central team that the extent of the damage was so alarming that it has not been possible for the State Government to submit reports from ‘ground zero’.

He also said that the scale of challenges faced by the State Government has been colossal and that it has become a tough ask for the government to attend to all the affected families.

He, however, informed the Central team that support from well-wishers have been overwhelming and generous donations have been made to the Chief Minister’s relief fund.

The Central team expressed satisfaction with their findings and informed the Chief Minister that the extent of damages had been well documented by the respected districts and issues regarding compensations to be paid to the victim would be sorted out in due course.

The team also discussed issues pertaining to temporary and permanent restoration of the flood-affected areas in Garo Hills.
