SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep National People Front (HNPF) on Tuesday presented a different version of the incident at the Meghalaya Cement Limited (Topcem Cements) on Monday evening stating that the Home guards on duty that day were actually the real victims and not what was reported otherwise.

Earlier it was reported that four officials of the Meghalaya Cement Limited (Topcem Cements) on Monday evening including its assistant general manager human resources, R Banerjee, were assaulted after home guard personnel, deployed as security guard in the cement company attacked the control room and administrative block of the plant on Monday evening.

“The statement issued by senior official SK Rai is false and baseless as they were the one who intended to harm the home guards on duty that night while lashing out unkind words to them,” HNPF president Ronnie Rani said.

According to him, one of the cement plant’s official was out after work when he started using unkind words on one of the home guard personal on duty and dragged him to a Bolero with an attempt to harm him. “Luckily, he managed to escape and informed the other guards and that is when the trouble erupted,” Rani said.

The HNPF president visited the four injured home guards admitted at the hospital on Tuesday and later threatened to take action if action is not taken against the erring officials.

Crucial meeting on Palatana project

Agartala: The Northeast Regional Load and Dispatch (NERLDC) has convened a crucial meeting to take a decision of undertaking trial run of Palatana’s first unit.

The meeting, which is scheduled at Guwahati on January 11, will be attended by agencies engaged in power transmission and distribution in the Northeast region. In the meeting, the decision of undertaking trial run of Palatana power project would be taken after reviewing the entire transmission system of the Northeast region, said Power Minister Manik Dey.

Representatives of main stakeholders- Tripura, Assam, Manipur and Meghalaya are expected to attend the all-important meeting. However, power evacuation will remain a major problem to run the Palatana project with full pace as transmission line could not be linked with National Power Grid at Bongaigon (Assam).

Dey, who visited the Palatana power plant on Monday along with OTPC Managing Director SK Dubey said that his visit was routine- to see how Gas Turbine and Steam Turbine are working there.

Reports from Palatana confirmed the BHEL is contemplating to hand over the first unit by end of this month after mandatory trial run for three consecutive days. After successful experimental run of two turbines, the first unit was shut down for few days.

Two-day back, both turbines were put on operation on experimental basis. On Monday the first unit of Palatana produced 178 MW power and state’s power scenario improves as TSECL has been receiving sufficient power from it.

OTPC General Manager S K Dubey said, the transmission line was drawn up to Silchar in Assam, but it needed to be drawn up to Bongaigaon for connecting with the national grid which was yet to be completed. He said, drawing the transmission lines through hilly terrain and forests was an uphill task, but the progress was satisfactory. Four Northeastern states – Assam, Mizoram, Meghalaya and Manipur – would buy power from the Palatana power plant, Dubey said.

Ranbir wants to play a bad guy

Actor Ranbir Kapoor

says he wants to

move away from his popular boy-next-door image and play a negative character on-screen.

“I want to play the role of a villain. I like Mogambo. There is something really exciting about villains.. they have beautiful girls around them every time, have lots of money and all the luxuries,” Ranbir said.

“Villains have the best life.. I really want to play a bad guy. But the only thing is they have to get beaten up by the hero in the end…but then it is ok,” he said.

At a time when big stars like Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgn are doing remakes, the 30-year-old actor is not keen on treading a similar path.

“I believe today times are changing in our industry and filmmakers are coming up with interesting subjects. So I feel why do something which has already been done by someone.. why not do something new and different. I don’t believe in remakes,” Ranbir said.

“I don’t think I would be able to do justice if I become a part of any of my dad’s or Mr Amitabh Bachchan’s remake films. I won’t be able to do what they did,” he said.

Ranbir will be seen next in Ayan Mukherjee’s ‘Yeh Jawani Hai Diwani’ opposite former girlfriend Deepika Padukone, followed by Abhinav Kashyap’s ‘Besharam’ and Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Bombay Velvet’. (PTI)

Obama, Karzai to hold meeting

WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai will discuss matters of war, including future US troop levels and Afghanistan’s army, when they meet on Friday, but matters of peace may be the most delicate item on their long agenda.

After nearly 10 months in limbo, tentative reconciliation efforts involving Taliban insurgents, the Karzai government and other major Afghan factions have shown new signs of life, resurrecting tantalizing hopes for a negotiated end to decades of war.

Pakistan, which US and Afghan officials have long accused of backing the insurgents and meddling in Afghanistan, has recently signaled an apparent policy shift toward promoting its neighbor’s stability as most US combat troops prepare to depart, top Pakistani and Afghan officials said.

In another potentially significant development, Taliban representatives met outside Paris last month with members of the Afghan High Peace Council – although not directly with members of the Karzai government, which they have long shunned.

US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the developments are promising – but that major challenges remain to opening negotiations, let alone reaching an agreement on the war-ravaged country’s political future.

Hopes for Afghan peace talks have been raised before, only to be dashed. Last March, the Taliban suspended months of quiet discussions with Washington aimed at getting the insurgents and the Karzai government to the peace table.

Obama is expected to press the Afghan president to bless the formal opening of a Taliban political office in the Gulf state of Qatar as a way to jump-start inter-Afghan talks.

Karzai has been lukewarm to the idea, apparently fearing his government would be sidelined in any negotiations.

TRIP AT A TURNING POINT

Karzai’s meeting with Obama, at the end of a three-day visit to Washington, is shaping up to be one of the most critical encounters between the two leaders, as the White House weighs how rapidly to remove most of the roughly 66,000 US troops in Afghanistan and how large a residual force to leave after 2014.

Obama, about to begin his second term in office, appears determined to wrap up US military engagement in Afghanistan.

On Monday, he announced as his nominee for Pentagon chief former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel, who appears likely to favor a sizeable US troop drawdown.

Other issues on the agenda have plenty of potential for causing friction: the future size and focus of the Afghan military; a festering dispute over control of the country’s largest detention center; and the future of international aid after 2014.

Karzai’s trip ‘is one of the most important ones because the discussions we are going to have with our counterparts will define the relations between (the) United States and Afghanistan,’ Afghan Foreign Minister Zalmay Rassoul told the lower house of parliament this month.

No final announcement on post-2014 US troop levels is expected during Karzai’s visit, and the issue is further complicated by Washington’s insistence on legal immunity for American troops that remain.

General John Allen, the top US and NATO commander in Afghanistan, recommended keeping between roughly 6,000 and 15,000 US troops in Afghanistan after 2014, but the White House is considering possibly leaving as few as 3,000 troops.

A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the White House had asked for options to be developed for keeping between 3,000 and 9,000 troops in the country. (Reuters)

Audience will not miss Emraan in ‘Murder 3’:Vishesh

Filmmaker Mukesh

Bhatt’s son Vishesh,

who is making his directorial debut with ‘Murder 3’, says the audience will not miss actor Emraan Hashmi this time, as Randeep Hooda fits the bill perfectly for the third installment of the franchise.

The franchise began in 2004 with ‘Murder’ directed by Anurag Basu starring Hashmi and Mallika Sherawat in the lead.

Then in 2011 came ‘Murder 2’ again with Hashmi but with Mohit Suri as the director and Jacqueline Fernandez playing the love interest.

Now in ‘Murder 3’ Randeep Hooda has replaced Hashmi, and Aditi Rao Hydari will be playing the leading lady alongside Pakistani actress Mona Lizza.

However, Vishesh feels that Hooda has not replaced Emraan per say. “We have not replaced anyone. We felt for ‘Murder 3’ Randeep was the best choice. If you all miss Emraan Hasmi in the film then do let me know. But according to me you all will not miss Emraan in the film as Randeep is perfect for this film,” Vishesh told reporters on Monday night, unveiling the first look of ‘Murder 3’.

“When we were making films with Emraan, people started questioning why we have him in almost every film. And now that we don’t have him people ask why he is not there in the film,” he said. “It is all about who suits the role. Like in case of ‘Jannat’, when I was writing the film it was meant for Emraan and so he did it,” the director said.

The film will release on Valentine’s Day. (PTI)

Girl repeatedly raped by father faces flogging

MALE: A 15-year-old in the Maldives whose father is accused of repeatedly raping her and killing the resulting baby risks being flogged for “fornication” with another man under the nation’s strict Islamic law, a police source said on Monday.

In the course of inquiries into the rape case, investigators say they unearthed evidence of the girl having had consensual sex with another man, which is an offence in the Indian Ocean holiday destination, the source said.

Women, including minors, having consensual sex outside marriage can be charged in the Maldives, where convicts can be publicly flogged.

Minors receive the punishment when they reach 18, the age of majority.

The child’s step-father is accused by police of repeatedly raping the girl and fathering a child by her which he subsequently murdered.

The girl’s mother has been charged with helping dispose of the infant’s body, police said.

“We completed the investigation (into the murder of the infant) and gave a report to the prosecutor general’s office,” Maldivian police spokesman Hassan Haneef said.

He declined to give details saying that Maldivian common law did not allow the discussion of any case involving a minor.

The local Haveeru newspaper quoted an unnamed official from the prosecutor’s office saying that the fornication charge was unrelated to the rape which had been separately dealt with.

The legal system of the Maldives, a nation of 330,000 Sunni Muslims known for its coral-fringed islands and sandy beaches, has elements of Islamic Sharia law as well as English common law. (AFP)
