SHILLONG: Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president DD Lapang has claimed that he was offered crores of rupees by several ticket aspirants from Ri-Bhoi district.

“They (ticket aspirants) have offered me an amount ranging between Rs 10 to 20 crore to give them the party ticket,” Lapang said while addressing the supporters of the West Khasi Hills District Congress Committee president Boldness L Nongum, a ticket aspirant for Mawthadraishan constituency, on Tuesday night.

It may mentioned that a number of businessmen and coal barons including Nehlang Lyngdoh and Ngaitlang Dhar have sought Congress ticket to contest in the 2013 Assembly elections from Ri-Bhoi.

Both Lyngdoh, a sitting MLA from Rymbai in Jaintia Hills and Dhar, brother of another sitting legislator Sniawbhalang Dhar (Nongbah-Wahiajer, Jaintia Hills) are planning to contest from Umsning and Umroi respectively.

The MPCC chief said he outrightly rejected the offer “since I am not holding this position for making money”.

“Had I accepted this money it would have been an insult to the chair I am holding”, Lapang said adding that he has been made the MPCC chief to serve the party to the best of his abilities.

Lapang further said that no person could bribe him to get the party ticket.

He made it clear the party would be allotting tickets adhering to the mandatory procedures which are required to be followed.

“The party leadership would not be biased or favour any aspirant while allotting the ticket,” Lapang assured.

New Delhi: Meghalaya Minister for Water Resources AL Hek on Wednesday raised a high pitched alarm against recurring floods in Garo Hills area of the State while demanding for scientific management of water ‘which is both scarce and plenty’ in the hill state.

Over one lakh people have been affected after Brahmaputra and Jingiram rivers submerged over 100 villages in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya this week. The worst-affected areas are Phulbari, Rajabala, Bhaitbari, Paham.

“Both the hill and plain areas of the states bordering Assam and Bangladesh have been affected with flash floods which has caused severe damage to life and property,” Hek said at a conference of the state irrigation ministers here. The Water Resource Minister also sought adequate Central assistance and permanent solution to the flood problem in Meghalaya.

“The State has initiated a plan to control floods in Wahumkhrah and Umshyrpi rivers,” he informed.

It may be mentioned that for the first time the entire plain belt area from Hallidaganj to Nidanpur along the Jingiram river was completely submerged.

“The areas of maximum impact are Bhaitbari and surrounding areas including Morasuti, Phershakandi, Anderkata and some villages in Rajabala”, Hek said adding that 14 relief camps were set up in the plain belt areas of West Garo Hills and the authorities have requisitioned boats for rescuing people.

Earlier, addressing the conference, Union Minister of State for Water Resources Vincent H Pala said water is a scarce natural resource, fundamental to life, food security, livelihood and equitable and sustainable development. “India has to support 18 per cent of the world’s population with just 4 per cent of the world’s fresh water resources. Our water resources are characterized by the large temporal and spatial variations which necessitate a transparent water information system”, Pala pointed out.

NGOs call for stern action against Rev Miller

Shillong: Several NGOs including the Lympung ki Seng Kynthei, the convening body, the Civil Society Women’s Organisation (CSWO- Agnes), the Khasi Students’ Union, Domestic Workers Union besides many other concerned individuals met at the Step by Step School on Wednesday to discuss the issue of alleged rape and molestation by Rev SK Miller of New Life Ministry.

The NGOs condemned the series of incidents of molestation indulged in by Miller and called for strict legal action against him. The meeting also urged the Child Welfare Committee of the Social Welfare Department which is questioning the children who have been abused and raped, to speed up the process and file the statements taken before a judicial magistrate at the earliest.

The NGOs also called for immediate removal of the present management from the Ministry so that free and fair investigations can be carried out.

Earlier, a US citizen, who said he had spent three years in Shillong and was part of the New Life Ministry, said that all the elders who are part of the Ministry but had chosen to remain silent about Miller’s acts of commission deserved to be booked because they are complicit by their silence.

Others suggested that the hostel – New Life Home– should be shut down at once and the financial affairs of the Ministry be prised open to find out how destitute children have been used as child labour in the Home even while donations were being sought from foreign donors for their upkeep.

Earlier, Angela Rangad, social activist, informed the gathering that Meghalaya did not yet have a Child Protection Act (CPA) which states like Goa have legislated on. “This Act would have provided avenues for protection of abused children and child labourers who are growing in numbers in the State,” Rangad said, adding that people who run hostels for school and college students should be asked to register with an authority like the CPA. She cited instances where boys have been abused in certain hostels in Shillong but they did not know where to seek help.

The NGOs present at the meeting have called on all children who are abused, molested, raped and do not know how to seek help, to call ChildLine at 1098.

Meanwhile the meeting also called on the law enforcers to handle the Miller case with the rigour it deserves.

“Rape and molestation charges are non-bailable offences but Miller is known to be an influential person. He should in fact have been arrested and we need to know what his health status actually is,” some NGO members observed.

Others pointed out to the random opening of hostels in Shillong without any supervision about how they are run. The meeting urged the Government to come down heavily on these hostels and to maintain strict vigil on how these are being run because they felt that similar instances of abuse and rape of young girls might be happening in other hostels as well.

It is learnt that the parents of the abused children have arrived at Shillong and have been whisked away by the relative of Rev Miller. They have later decided to take their children back home.

“We should ensure that the statements of these children are recorded before a magistrate, before they are allowed to leave Shillong,” Angela Rangad said. She also called upon the investigating agencies to seize the computers and mobile phones of the managers of New Life Ministry to find out the modus operandi on which the Ministry is run.

Soso Tham’s sculptures come up at Sohra

SOHRA: Sohra, the birth place of the legendary Khasi poet U Soso Tham had to wait for 72 long years before a statue could be installed in his memory. The poet had expired in December 1940.

Now after a long wait Sohra is honoured to have not one but two statues of this great Khasi poet.

The two statues which were installed at the Cherra Teacher’s Training Centre, Nongsawlia and at the premises of the office of Syiem of Sohra at Upper Sohra were unveiled by MTDC chairman Ronnie V Lyngdoh on Wednesday.

At present, besides the bust at State Central Library, there is another statue of U Soso Tham at the NEHU campus. The two statues installed at Sohra were at the initiative of the Sohra MLA Dr PW Khongjee and the Soso Tham Commemorative Committee.

The idea of erecting these statues was proposed at the 71st Death Anniversary celebration of this great Khasi literary figure at Sohra in 2011.

“It is an honour for the family to see such a befitting recognition being given to our great grand uncle,” Ms Saralin Tham, the great grand niece of Soso Tham told The Shillong Times after the unveiling of the statues.

While admitting that it took a long time for Sohra to have these statues in memory of this legendary figure, Tham said that the reason for this might be that people have only now recognized the greatness and contributions of U Soso Tham, after reading his works at the under-graduate and post graduate levels.

According to Tham, from the side of the family they never had plans to erect a statue of this nature because it was beyond their capacity to do so.

“Through the initiative of my mother and the support of various people, we had only erected a memorial stone at Saitsohpen in Sohra in 2007,” she said.

When asked about her thoughts on the works of her great grand uncle, Tham said, “To me, Soso Tham was a great visionary”.

Recalling the great Khasi literary figure, the founder members of the Khasi Author’s Society (KAS) KW Nongrum said U Soso Tham was born to a very poor family at Saitsohpen, Sohra in 1873.

“He was the third and only son in a family of four children,” Nongrum said, adding, that because of acute poverty, Soso Tham had to discontinue his studies after the eighth standard after his father’s death. However despite not completing his high school Soso Tham became a high school teacher and excelled in his teaching career”.

According to Nongrum, Tham was the first poet to initiate secular literature with diction, both singular and genuine.

“U Soso Tham is basically remembered for his beautiful poems. His “Ka Duitara Ksiar” (The Golden Harp, 1925) – a compilation of poems, is one of the most distinguished works,” Nongrum said.

Earlier while speaking at a function after unveiling the statues, MTDC chairman Ronnie V Lyngdoh said that the birth place of the legendary Khasi poet should have had these statues much earlier.

‘But I am happy to see that these sculptures have finally come up at Sohra despite the long wait,” Lyngdoh said.

According to him, Soso Tham was a natural poet whose spontaneity was reflected in his poetry like the clean fountains of the hills of Meghalaya.

“He was an exponent in the field of literature and poetry,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sohra MLA Dr PW Khongjee informed that the sculptures statues were sculpted in Kolkata at a total expense of Rs 5 lakh.

“We have put up these statues in Sohra as a mark of respect to the great man and to encourage the youth to follow the in the footsteps of the bard also known as a ‘Messiah’ of the Khasi community,” Khongjee who is also the Parliamentary Secretary in charge Tourism added.
