Libya govt says its flag flies over Bani Walid

0

TRIPOLI: Libyan interim government forces said on Monday they had raised the country’s new flag over Bani Walid, one of the last bastions of pro-Muammar Gaddafi loyalists, but it was not yet clear if the town had been completely captured.

Along with Gaddafi’s hometown Sirte, Bani Walid has been one of only two towns in Libya where there is still armed resistance to the rule of the National Transitional Council (NTC).

”We have reached the city centre (of Bani Walid) and have raised the flag,” Colonel Abdullah Naker, head of the Tripoli Revolutionist Council, told Reuters on Sunday.

Fighters taking part in the assault on Bani Walid also told Reuters they had entered the town which is nestled into rocky hills some 150 km south of Tripoli.

Bani Walid is an ancestral home to the Warfalla, Libya’s biggest and one of its most politically-influential tribes. They number about a million out of the country’s six million population and were traditional supporters of Gaddafi.

Bani Walid has been under siege for weeks, with hundreds of Gaddafi loyalists dug into its steep valleys and hills resisting advancing interim government forces.

As well as the military assault, NTC officials have been negotiating with tribal leaders inside Bani Walid for its surrender.

A group claiming to represent the people of the town issued an offer of a truce to Libya’s new government on Monday. In return for pledging loyalty to the NTC, the tribal groups said they would take over the town, but demanded in return the NTC should withdraw its forces from the area and lift the siege.

It was not immediately clear what the government response would be to the offer, or whether the town had already been completely captured by NTC forces.

Meanwhile in Sirte, where Gaddafi loyalists have been under siege for weeks, there was little or no sign of NTC forces making any progress on Monday.

NTC fighters maintained their bombardment of a small area where they have boxed in the remaining Gaddafi loyalist in the centre of Sirte. Libya’s new leaders say they will only begin the transition to democracy after they capture Sirte.

Some fighters on the ground have expressed irritation that their commanders had not ordered an advance.

A doctor for the medical aid charity Medecins Sans Frontieres in Sirte has estimated 10,000 people remain trapped in the city of 75,000 residents. Many are women and children, some are sick or injured.

The often chaotic struggle for Sirte has killed scores of people, left thousands homeless and laid waste to much of what was once a showpiece Mediterranean city where Gaddafi entertained foreign leaders. (UNI)

McCartney, Shevell off to Caribbean honeymoon

London: Newlywed couple Paul McCartney and Nancy Shevell have jetted off to the Caribbean island of Mustique for their honeymoon.

“Sir Paul is a regular visitor to Mustique and has stayed before at the home of Mr. (Mick) Jagger,” mirror.co.uk quoted an islander as saying.

“He loves the privacy the island offers and there is no better place to spend a honeymoon. Everyone will just leave them to enjoy their special time together,” the islander added.

The couple, who got married last week at London’s Marylebone Register Office, will enjoy floodlit tennis court and a 25ft swimming pool at the resort. They will also have their own personal watersports instructor.

The island is home to Basil’s Bar, which has become a popular evening spot for a number of stars who have visited the island including Kate Moss, David Bowie and Liam Gallagher. (IANS)

Tough schedule awaits United in C League battle

0

LONDON: Pitted in arguably the weakest of the eight Champions League groups, Manchester United is surprisingly facing a real battle to qualify for the knockout stage heading into back-to-back matches against unknown quantity Otelul Galati of Romania.

United, which has won Europe’s biggest prize three times and was beaten by Barcelona in last season’s final at Wembley, opened up this year’s competition with draws against Benfica and Basel, leaving the English champions third in Group C after two games.

The pressure is now on Alex Ferguson’s men to start picking up wins if they are to avoid a nailbiting last couple of matchdays. They’ll be fully expected to do just that in the double-header against Otelul, which is yet to earn a point in its debut season in the Champions League.

“We have made it a little bit more difficult than we would have liked, with two draws in our first two games,” United and England defender Rio Ferdinand said.

With Barcelona, AC Milan and Inter Milan grabbing victories in matchday two, United is the heavyweight in most danger of misisng out on qualification.

For that reason, manager Alex Ferguson is likely to pick his big names for Tuesday’s trip to Romania’s national stadium Bucharest, where Otelul is playing its home matches—150 miles away from its own ground in Galati.

That would mean a recall to the team for Wayne Rooney, who missed Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Liverpool in the Premier League because Ferguson said the striker was “devastated” at being suspended for the first three matches of the 2012 European Championship following a recent red card on England duty.

Fellow striker Javier Hernandez and Portugal winger Nani could also return along with fit-again captain Nemanja Vidic.

Basel and Benfica, who both have four points, meet in Switzerland in the group’s other match.

While United’s pool could go down to the wire, Group H containing Barcelona and AC Milan could well be wrapped up with two matches remaining.

Barcelona has a double-header coming up against Viktoria Plzen, starting with a home match Wednesday, and Milan plays BATE Borisov back to back. Two straight wins for established powers, who both currently have four points, will guarantee them a top-two finish.

Similarly in Group A, leader Bayern Munich is bidding Tuesday for a third straight victory when it takes on Napoli.

Chelsea, which is top of Group E with four points from a possible six, will expect to beat struggling Genk at home. (Agencies)

The economic blockade imposed by SHDDC should be strengthened and continued further so that the Government of India can hear the voice of the people.

Australia to end IELTS monopoly for student visas

0

Melbourne: Australia will end the monopoly enjoyed by International English Language Testing System (IELTS) from Nov 5.

Other English language test providers have now been allowed to gain entry to the Australian international education market.

“It’s a positive step in the right direction,” says Jag Khairra, a Melbourne-based education and immigration consultant.

Once the IELTS monopoly ceases, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) case officers would start accepting results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), Pearson’s PTE Academic test and the Cambridge English Advanced test.

Currently, the student visa applicants from the “high-risk” countries such as India and China are required to provide IELTS test score as evidence of English proficiency. IELTS, which is jointly owned by Australia’s IDP and British Council, is also used as a standard for all the work and skilled migration related visas. (IANS)

Rocky inspires Hugh Jackman

London: Actor Hugh Jackman says he was inspired by the music of Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky, when he was getting fit for the role as a boxer in Real Steel.

“My favourite boxing movie is a documentary called ‘When We Were Kings’, which I would put in my top 10 of all time, but I love all the ‘Rocky’ movies. I’ll be honest, and I know it’s corny, but I listen to the Rocky theme when I’m training,” Jackman told Bang Showbiz.

Real Steel director Shawn Levy also admits that the Rocky movies played a part in the way he made the film, despite not holding them all in high regard, reports contactmusic.com.

“I didn’t go into it thinking of it as a homage to any single movie, I love sports movies and I always have, specifically the Rocky movies. Not only the first one, where as a filmmaker I am supposed to revere and do – but even the pulpier, slightly crappier ones, like three and four – I love them too!

“You can laugh about it, but that rousing, escapist, underdog story, I loved it when I was a young teenager and I love it now. I re-watched all of them when preparing for this movie, and it still works for me.

“So in that regard, I really do believe that a well-made, engaging, underdog sports movie can be as compelling for adults as it can be for kids, so the goal was to make a movie that would appeal to both of those levels.” (IANS)

Mancini wants long haul at City

0

MANCHESTER: Roberto Mancini has spoken of his plans to remain at Manchester City for “many years” as he looks to pledge his long-term future to the mega-rich club.

The Manchester City manager, who succeeded Mark Hughes in December 2009, has less than two years remaining on his current contract.

Yet after guiding Manchester City to their first trophy success in 35 years by winning the FA Cup last season, he further strengthened his position by leading them into the Champions League.

With Manchester City now top of the Premier League, having made their best league start since 1897, the Italian has also boosted his power base over his handling of Carlos Tevez’s alleged refusal to come on as a substitute against Bayern Munich last month.

Mancini, who revealed discussions over a new contract have not begun and are not a priority, says he wants to continue the revolution at the Etihad Stadium for a while longer yet.

He said: “After this year I have one more year and I don’t have a problem with this. “I haven’t talked to the club but at the moment it is not important.

“My feeling here is good. I would like to stay here but in football every week it can change.

“If you lose two or three games, that can change all – but we are working well.

“I started to work here two years ago, I have worked hard to build a good team.

“I would like to stay here another three or four years because I think at this moment Manchester City is one of the best clubs in the world.” Mancini, who did complain last summer about a lack of control at the club, has certainly been backed up in the transfer marked with vast amounts of funds being provided from owner Sheikh Mansour and chairman Khaldoon Al-Mubarak.

He has opened the chequebook having spent millions of pounds on new signings, with this arrival seeing him recruit the likes of Sergio Aguero, Edin Dzeko and David Silva within the last year. (Agencies)
