Iranian actress awarded jail term, 90 lashes

0

MELBOURNE: Iranian Actress Marzieh Vafamehr has been sentenced to a year in jail and 90 lashes by an Iranian court for her role in an Australian film on the limits imposed on artists in the Islamic republic.

The film My Tehran for Sale which won the 2009 Independent Spirit Inside Film award and the jury award for best best feature film at the Trimedia Film Festival in 2010 has been directed by Iranian-Australian Granaz Moussavi.

It was production of Adelaide-based Cyan Films and the movie tells the story of a young actress in Tehran whose theatre work is banned by the authorities.

The film has been shot entirely on location in Tehran and was premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival in 2009, included rarely seen images of modern urban Iran and revealed how young Iranian people live behind closed doors.

Cyan Films’ producers, Kate Crosser and Julie Ryan, were not available for comment about Vafamehr’s sentence.

The Iranian-origin actress, who appears in the movie without a hijab and with a shaved head, was first arrested in Tehran in July after the film was heavily criticised by Iran’s conservative commentators.

Iranian authorities have not released details of the charges against her.

According to The Age, Iran’s Fars news agency was quoted as saying that the film had not been approved for screening in Iran and was being distributed illegally.

It is believed Vafamehr’s family will appeal against the decision to punish her. (PTI)

Woman gives birth after running marathon

Chicago: Amber Miller says she felt contractions minutes after crossing the Chicago Marathon finish line.

A few hours after completing the 42-kilometer race Sunday, the suburban Chicago woman gave birth to her daughter, June.

The 27-year-old is an experienced marathoner who found out she was pregnant after signing up for the race months ago.

She figured she’d play it by ear on whether or not she’d run.

Miller was nearly 39 weeks pregnant by Sunday. She got clearance from her doctor to half run and half walk the race. She finished in 6 hours and 25 minutes, much slower than her previous seven marathons.

Miller spoke to The Associated Press from the hospital and says she received encouraging cheers during the race and never felt bad, except for some feet blisters. (AP)

Sunken ship of silver discovered

Tampa (Florida): A Florida deep-sea exploration company with a record of finding sunken treasure has discovered a ship filled with silver 8,000 feet beneath the North Atlantic Ocean, the firm said.

Odyssey Marine Exploration Inc said on Monday it found the remains of the SS Mantola, which sank on Feb 9 1917, after being torpedoed by a German submarine during World War I.

The ship was insured to carry silver worth 110,000 British pounds when it sailed in 1917. That value would mean it could hold as much as 600,000 ounces of silver or nearly 19 tons based on silver prices at the time.

Odyssey will retain 80 per cent of the value of the silver that’s recovered. At current market prices, that much silver would be worth more than USD 19 million.

The shipwreck is about 160 kilometers away from an earlier one found by Odyssey. The SS Gairsoppa sank in 1941 carrying a reported cargo of up to 7 million ounces of silver. (AP)

World’s most expensive pudding for 22K pounds

London: A restaurant in UK has launched what is thought to be the world’s most expensive pudding for 22,000 pounds.

Styled like a Faberge Easter egg, the chocolate concoction is believed to have battered all previous records with its lavish list of ingredients, which include gold, champagne caviar and a two-carat diamond.

The pudding is made with four different types of the finest Belgian chocolate flavoured with a combination of peach, orange and whiskey.

It is layered with champagne jelly and a light biscuit joconde and glazed with edible gold leaf.

Marc Guibert, head chef at Lindeth Howe Country House Hotel in Windermere, Cumbria, created the record pudding, which is being launched for National Chocolate Week.

“Marc has used all of his culinary talents to whip up a truly incredible concoction of chocolate, champagne and gold leaf, all topped off with a diamond,” the Daily Mail quoted Stephen Broughton, managing director of Lindeth Howe, as saying.

“It looks spectacular and has a price tag to match!” he stated.

At 22,000 pounds, the dessert easily breaks the world record currently held by New York’s Serendipity 3 Restaurant, which was selling its Frrrozen Haute Chocolate last year for a cool 15,730 pounds. (ANI)

Pak court stays Qadri’s death sentence

0

Islamabad: A Pakistani court on Tuesday stayed the implementation of death sentence given to the self- confessed assassin of Governor Salmaan Taseer till it decided his appeal against the verdict.

A bench of the Islamabad High Court headed by Chief Justice Iqbal Hameed-ur-Rehman issued the order after it began hearing the appeal filed by Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, the police guard who gunned down Taseer outside a restaurant in Islamabad on January 4.

Qadri, who publicly confessed to killing Taseer for criticising the country’s controversial blasphemy law, was represented in the High Court by Khwaja Muhammad Sharif, a retired Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court.

Sharif contended that the anti-terrorism court which conducted Qadri’s trial did not have the power to give him the death sentence.

The High Court also sought a response from the federal government to Qadri’s appeal. Several senior retired judges and dozens of members of bar associations of various cities were present in the court during today’s hearing.

Several of them offered to represent Qadri, witnesses said. Authorities deployed a large contingent of security personnel at the court complex as hundreds of Qadri’s supporters, including members of hardline religious groups, gathered there this morning. The supporters shouted slogans and demanded Qadri’s acquittal and release. (PTI)

KALAYA: Militants fired two missiles at a rally led by the governor of Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province on Tuesday, killing one person and wounding four, but the governor was not hurt, security officials said.

Governor Masood Kasur was to address ethnic Pashtun tribal leaders when the rally was attacked in Kalaya, a town in the Orakzai region, the officials said.

”The governor was receiving a briefing before the start of the function when the rockets struck. He is safe,” senior government official Fazal Qadir said.

”One rocket fell near the helipad while the other landed inside the ground where the rally was being held.”

Orakzai is one of the seven agencies of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas in the northwest. All but Orakzai shares a border with Afghanistan.

There was no claim of responsibility for the attack but Pakistani Taliban, who have been fighting to topple the US-backed government for years, operate in the area. (Reuters)

Still many things I should be doing: Amitabh

Mumbai: Mega star Amitabh Bachchan, who turned 69 on Tuesday, says one of the best ways to celebrate birthdays is to keep working.

Despite completing 40 years in Bollywood, the ageing actor is not the one to rest on his laurels. He is busy shooting for Ram Gopal Varma’s Department, despite getting injured on the sets of the film. He is also hosting the season 5 of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) on Sony TV.

“One of the best ways to bring in birthdays is to be working at what you need to be working on…I work because of I need to ….love!!,” Bachchan said.

The actor returned home at midnight after shooting for the diwali episodes of KBC and said he could just make it home in time for the clock to strike 12 and for the family to wish him. “The greatest joys of life are in the simple wishes,” he said.

Immediately afterwards, he settled to interact with fans from all over the world on his blog and micro-blogging site twitter.

“It is past midnight! It is my birthday today! It is another year gone by! It is stepping in to the 70th year for me! Thank you! Have just been released from the clutches of work form KBC… and here to thank you all for the love and affection you shower!! “They ask me what I wish for my birthday .. why only on the birthday, it should be everyday… I wish another day to pass in peace ! Thank you all once again for all the Birthday wishes … I am so humbled and filled with pride .. you make it all happen .. my love,” he said.

“As I step into the 70’s unabashedly, I need to thank several of those that I feel were the ones that seemed distressed with the number of my age. But no they are not so! When they speak of age and involvement, why must we only look upon the aged, onto those that show the ravishes of time and the hunger of recognition. I would imagine that we must let the world be as it is and allow whatever shape it desires to take vis-a-vis individuals,” he wrote.

Bachchan gained popularity in the early 1970s as the ‘angry young man’ of Hindi cinema, with films like Agneepath, Trishul, Deewar, Zanjeer.

Year 2011 saw Bachchan rekindle his ‘angry young man’ image, that he is best known for, in Bbuddha Hoga Terra Baap. But on the personal front, he is set to become a grandfather again, as son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai are expecting their first child.

The actor had said that he felt the grandchild would bring the child in him. (PTI)

Pitt, Jolie donate $340,000 for Somalia famine victims

London: Hollywood couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have donated $340,000 for famine victims in Somalia.

“I’m so grateful – I don’t want to cry – to the refugee families that I have the honour and privilege to spend the last years with. From them I’ve learned so much. I’ve learned to be a better person, a better mother. They’ve inspired me by showing me the unbreakable strength of the human spirit,” she said.

Contactmusic.com reports that the couple gave the money through their Jolie-Pitt Foundation to the Humanitarian Initiative Just Relief Aid, which helps care for mothers who have been displaced from the war-torn nation.

Mohamed Dahir from the organisation said the money would allow for an expansion of the Badbaado camp in Mogadishu – the capital city of Somalia – which takes in around 300 women and children every day.

Around 29,000 children under the age of five reportedly died due to drought and famine in the country, and the United Nations claims 750,000 people are at risk of starving to death in the next few months. (IANS)

John Travolta’s movie on hold

London: John Travolta’s upcoming movie about the notorious Gotti family has been put on hold due to financial issues. Travolta, 57, is due to star as late Mafia boss John Gotti – who died in prison in 2002 – in upcoming movie Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father alongside his real-life wife Kelly Preston and actor Al Pacino, Daily Star reported. Filming is slated to begin in January but a new report suggests production has been put on hold. Reports suggest work on the project has come to a halt and won’t resume until more financing is secured. “If (producer) Marc Fiore doesn’t come up with money this week, and doesn’t show that more is coming, and that he’s really secured financing, it could all fall apart,” a source said. The film’s producers are also facing a legal battle with Goodfellas star Joe Pesci, who has sued bosses at Fiore Films over allegations that he was offered a 2 million pounds deal to play Angelo Ruggiero, an associate of Gotti. Robert Downey Jr wants to direct

Los Angeles: Sherlock Holmes star Robert Downey Jr says he wants to eventually retire from acting and step behind the camera. The 46-year-old actor says Mel Gibson had dismissed the idea of directing while they worked together on 1990’s Air America, shortly before stepping behind the camera. The actor is now convinced he wants to follow his former co-star into the director’s chair, reported Los Angeles Times. “The great thing was working with Mel right before he went off and did Hamlet and started directing. I remember him telling someone on the set, ‘I would never be a director, it’s a terrible idea,’ and three years later he couldn’t not direct. “That’s where I’m heading towards now. It’s almost irresponsible learning what I’ve learned and having the influences and relationships I’ve had to not try to infuse that with movies more as a director,” Downey added. (PTI)
