Royal Wahingdoh players pose with the trophy after their win on Friday.

SHILLONG: Kareem Omliaja struck twice to lead Royal Wahingdoh FC to a historic 2-1 win against Langsning SC in the 60th Bharat Ratna Lokapriya Bordoloi Trophy at the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati on Friday. With this win, Wahingdoh became the first team from Meghalaya to claim the coveted title.

“It is great to emerge winners here and we would like to back it up with another trophy (SPL) back home in Shillong tomorrow,” Wahingdoh caoch Carlton Chapman said.

In an evenly contested encounter, Langsning went into the lead as early as the 6th minute when Yinka Joel Sunday Ayeni forwarded an excellent pass to PK Ningleithing who made no mistake to put the ball into the nets.

After this initial setback, Wahingdoh took the attack to the opposition and consistently penetrated through the Langsning defence. A well crafted free kick by Kareem Omliaja went past Langsniing goalkeeper to give Wahingdoh the all important equaliser in the 35th minute. The scores remained levelled at the end of the stipulated 90 minutes.

Wahingdoh came out strongly in the extra time and Kareem Omliaja scored again from a free kick taken from 30 yards range to give his team a famous 2-1 victory.
